 2022 SURVIVAL GUIDE AND ITINERARY - DEER HAVEN CAMPGROUND - DIXIE NATL FOREST

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW NOW or SHOULD KEEP IN MIND…


Hello everyone, review this information as there will be information that will help you with planning for this trip.  You can bookmark this page and refer to it at a later date.

For those of you that are new or have camped with us in prior years but have not joined us in recent years.  THERE WILL BE NO MEALS PROVIDED on this trip.  This is a major change from the previous trips, so please plan accordingly. 

All campers will be responsible for covering the cost of their own transportation, camping equipment, meals, and supplies for the duration of the trip.  You can go in with other campers with meals and supplies as well as carpooling which is highly recommended.  The nearest major city is Cedar City with restaurants and grocery stores. As well as the nearest town Duck Creek Village.

  • Please bring your own meals, drinks, and trail snacks/mixes.

  • Make sure you have all your equipment, if you’re going to borrow equipment from someone, get it a.s.a.p.

  • Set up your carpool with other campers now.

  • Carpools are responsible for all their transportation expenses during the trip.

  • Please help with the person driving you by reimbursing them for the cost of gas, etc…round-trip is approximately 975+ miles from Porter Ranch, Los Angeles (without excursions).  Possible ~8 hours drive one-way from LA Valley area. Flight time from LAX is 4:10 hours to Cedar City Regional Airport.

  • Please make sure you have reliable transportation (car is in shape).

  • If you are planning to hike, make sure to bring hiking shoes that you've used before and bring nail clippers.

  • Bring your own bottled water, favorite drinks, and snacks (drinks not provided)

  • There are flush and vault toilets at our campground.

  • We will caravan to the park, if you have FRS/GRMS radios (walkie-talkies), bring them.

  • Bring cash for incidentals during the trip (limited ATMs at the park).

  • BE PREPARED FOR RAINY AND WET CONDITIONS! (Thunderstorms are frequent in the afternoon in the area).

WHAT TO BRING 

  • Tent

  • Sleeping Bag

  • Pillow

  • Air Mattress (optional)

  • Clothing:  Warm clothes for the evenings (jeans, sweatshirts w/ hood, jackets,  sweatpants, and pajamas.) Cool clothes for the daytime (shirts,  T-shirts, hats, swimsuits).

  • Towels

  • Toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, lotion, hairbrush, combs, etc. Lots of quarters (coins) for showers.

  • Shoes: walking + hiking shoes (at least two pairs), rubber slippers for taking showers.

  • Nail clippers.

  • A bundle of Firewood per car can be purchased in the city or possibly at the campsite host.

OTHER EQUIPMENT  

  • Flashlight

  • Portable lamps

  • Insect/Mosquito repellent

  • Sunscreen

  • First Aid: Band-Aids, Tylenol, cough syrup, Pepto or Mylanta

  • Camp Chair

  • Batteries for radios and flashlights

  • Coolers for food storage

OTHER   

  • Tool Box

  • Camera (for making memories)

  • Bring your own drinks. Drinks WILL NOT be provided. Bring enough to last 7-8 days (esp. water)!!!

  • Bring your own snacks, especially for days when we will be hiking (i.e. trail mix, nuts, dried fruit).

  • Bring some spending money just in case you want to purchase things on the day trip(s).

  • Coins for showers (bring lots of quarters for long showers)

We won't be doing a major caravan but there are campers leaving August 10th, at 5:30pm (Wednesday evening overnight in Las Vegas) as well as early morning August 11th.

EDGE CAMPING TRIP (AUGUST 11 TO AUGUST 16, 2022)

Dixie Natl Forest, Cedar Breaks Natl Monument, Bryce Canyon & Zion Natl Parks - Deer Haven Campground, Utah

August 11-16, 2022


Overview

Dixie Natl Forest is adjacent to three national parks and two national monuments.  It stretches for 170s miles across southern Utah and includes two million acres which makes it the largest national forest in Utah.  Red sandstone formations in Red Canyon, the home of Thunder Mountain trail,  rival those of Bryce Canyon Natl Park.  Hell's Backbone Bridge and the view into Death Hollow are breathtaking.  Many opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, viewing and sightseeing amazing sceneries.


Campground

Campground is situated high on the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, close to Cedar City, Utah. Visitors enjoy hiking, biking and day-tripping to nearby Cedar Breaks National Monument. Deer Haven is at an elevation of 8,900 feet. This peaceful and scenic campground is surrounded by a forest of aspen and pine trees. Summer wildflowers are abundant throughout the site. The 34-mile Virgin River Rim Trail passes near the campground and is open to hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Deer Haven is just 11 miles from Cedar Breaks National Monument, with hiking trails, guided tours and breathtaking scenery. Just outside Cedar Breaks is the Ashdown Gorge Wilderness Area, where hikers will find 10 miles of trails and the Twisted Forest, a stand of ancient bristlecone pine.
